Old Rail Trail

Ideal for lovers of the outdoors, this spectacular 42km cycle path takes you from Mullingar to Athlone. A converted stretch of the Midlands Great Western Railway carved through rick fertile farmland, the Old Rail Trail Greenway leads visitors through the very heart of Ireland. Mullingar to Castletown is 11.4km and mostly flat with gentle slopes. Suitable for family groups of all ages and all types of bikes. The Greenway follows the old railway through sheltered countryside, surrounded by trees and meets the Royal Canal.
Blueway

Whether you’re into paddling, walking, cycling or simply hooked on the outdoors, make your Blueway trip on the Royal Canal one to remember. The Royal Canal Blueway offers users 23km of tranquil, peaceful paddling experience. Start from your base at the Activity Zone in Mullingar Harbour and paddle west to Ballinea Slip where there are services and facilities on hand for a picnic break before returning or paddle on towards Coolnahay Harbour, a beautiful picturesque site where wild camping is available. This is the perfect day trip. Alternatively, travel east to McNead’s Bridge where you’ll find yourself on the doorstep of Mary Lynch’s pub for a bite of food before returning to Mullingar Harbour. Mullingar Harbour to McNead’s Bridge Distance: 12 km Duration: 4hrs Difficulty: Easy Car Parking available at Mullingar Harbour and McNead’s Bridge with access to Blueway at slipway/jetty. Mullingar Harbour to Ballinea Slip Distance: 7 km Duration: 4 hrs Difficulty: Easy Car Parking available at Mullingar Harbour and at Ballinea Slip. Ballinea Slip to Coolnahay South (Lock 26) Distance: 4 km Duration: 1hr 20 mins Difficulty: Easy Car Parking available at Ballinea Slip and Coolnahay Harbour. Service facilities along with further recreational activities available at the Mullingar Activity Zone. Located in Mullingar Harbour, the Activity Zone is the ideal location to begin your Blueway adventure. Hire a bike from Mullingar Bike Hire or make a splash out on the water with Outdoor Sports.
